HAMDEN — Multiple sources inside Quinnipiac Athletics say Quinnipiac is close to announcing Connecticut’s Tom Moore as their newest head men’s basketball coach. Sources say Quinnipiac is planning an announcement for later this week.

A source says it is “highly likely” there will be an announcement soon, and the plan is to introduce Moore as Quinnipiac’s newest coach.

Moore, 42 in May, has most recently been the asssociate head coach at the University of Connecticut under the tutelage of Jim Calhoun.

He has been at UConn for 13 years, and was promoted to his current position before the 2005-2006 season. For the previous 11 seasons, Moore was previously an assistant coach at the program after joining UConn before the 1994-95 season.

Moore has garnered a reputation as a solid recruiter, which has led him to be a candidate for many head coaching positions throughout the country. This season, he was mentioned as a candidate for the vacant St. Bonaventure job, but interviewed Sunday at Quinnipiac, toured the TD Banknorth Sports Center, and now is primed to accept the job.

It has been previously reported that QU plans to award the new coach up to $300,000; quite a large number for a school of Quinnipiac’s stature as an NEC team. That, along with “The Bank,” made this opening an attractive one.
