HAMDEN – The Bobcats thought that they could do better than the 7 goal loss that came the last time they faced the Big Green from Dartmouth. Instead, they took another beating, losing 6-0 to the Big Green at the TD Banknorth Sports Center Friday night.
The Bobcats had reason to believe that they could perform better than they did in their first meeting with Dartmouth. The Bobcats had earned three points last weekend and in three of their last four games, beating Brown on the road and earning a point in a tie with Yale after a home win over Union the previous weekend. However, after a first period which saw Bobcat goaltender Tia Wishart play exceptionally well in front of her net, the Bobcats surrendered five second period goals en route to the loss.
A put back from a rebound by Carrie Thompson after a shot by Sarah Newnam gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead. Just 48 seconds later, Dartmouth went up 2-0 when Maggie Kennedy scored on a breakaway shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle. Thompson got her second and third goals of the game two and a half minutes apart near the end of the second period. On her second goal, Thompson took a slap shot from the blue line while on a power play, and it beat Wishart for Dartmouth’s 3rd goal of the game. Her hat trick scoring goal came when Thompson found a loose puck in front of Quinnipiac’s net, and with the Bobcats Trudy Reyns unable to sweep the puck away, Thompson shot it in to give Dartmouth a 4-0 lead. With just 13 seconds remaining in the period, the Big Green got their 5th goal of the period and game from Sarah Toupal, who earned her first goal of the year on a wrist shot from the left side of the crease, in the same location as Kennedy’s goal.
The 3rd period saw Dartmouth add one more goal, a goal by Shannon Bowman midway through the third from Sarah Parson and Katie Horner against Jamie Miller, inserted into the game at the beginning of the third. However, the Bobcats earned the spotlight in the third period from two events: first, Antoinette Maldonado earned a five minute checking from behind penalty and a game misconduct with 16:10 remaining in the game. Then, a major scare came for the Bobcats as Kellie Davies went down after being hit in the wrist with the puck. She was helped off the ice as play was stopped for almost 10 minutes to clean the blood off the ice.
The Bobcats fell to 2-13-4 in conference play, and Dartmouth went to 11-5-3. The Bobcats returned to action Saturday afternoon when they took on the 25-1 Harvard Crimson, losing 4-0. The game was Quinnipiac’s final of their home schedule. They finish their season with 2 away games next weekend when they visit Clarkson and #6 St. Lawrence.
NOTES: Dartmouth outshot Quinnipiac 15-5 in the second, and 48-22 in the game. Dartmouth’s first 3 goals came within a span of 4 shots. … 4 Big Green players had a multi-point night: Carrie Thompson (3 goals), Sarah Toupal (1 goal 1 assist), Sarah Parsons (2 assists), and Marley McMillan (2 assists). … The Bobcats were shut out for just the 4th time all season, but it was the 2nd consecutive shutout at home. They were shut out 4-0 by RPI on February 2nd.
