Women’s Lax Opens Season with Win

HAMDEN — On Wednesday, February 27, the Women’s Lacrosse team began their quest for a fifth consecutive playoff birth the right way with a 16-9 victory over Iona at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey/Lacrosse Turf Complex.

The scoring was early and often for the Bobcats as they scored six goals in the first 11 minutes of the game to give them a 6-0 lead and they added four more in the half, to only three for Iona.

Iona tried to battle back in the second half as the Gaels were able to put six in the back of the net. However, Quinnipiac was able to match them goal for goal to hold onto their lead and win the game 16-9.

The offensive attack of the Bobcats was led by two junior midfielders. As, Tiffany Manzi netted four goals and also added an assist and a four groundballs, and Ashley Valentine contributed with three goals of her own with a groundball. The young Quinnipiac team also saw four players score their first career goals. Freshman Defender Kaitlyn Kelly scored the first goal of the game just a 1:10 into the game to go along with two groundballs. Freshman Midfielder Laura Iannotti came off the bench to score her first career goal with 18:50 remaining in the first half. Freshmen Midfielder Jennifer Skipper scored at the 16:01 mark to get her first collegiate goal, she also added a groundball in the contest. And last, but definitely not least Freshman Midfielder Lauren Mastusczczak had two assist and a groundball to go along with her first career goal which came with just 1:24 remaining in the first half.

Sophomore Goalie Hannah Nelson guided the defense to only give up nine goals on the day. Nelson had 14 saves while only giving up six goals on 20 shots on goal, and picked up her first victory of the season before giving way to freshman Alexandra DeStefano who made 5 saves and gave up 3 goals while facing 8 shots.

The Bobcats try to open up the season 2-0 when they go to Storrs, to take on UCONN Tuesday.
