(HAMDEN, Conn.) – Furtuna Velaj, a freshman forward for the Bobcat’s women’s soccer team, is the choice for athlete of the week after her two goals lifted QU over St. Bonaventure in Sunday’s season opener at Bobcat Field. After an early goal by the Bonnies, Velaj scored her first collegiate goal off a free kick just outside the 18 yard box to tie the game at one. Her second goal in the 44th minute which was a ground shot just getting by the left side of St. Bonaventure’s goalie to put the Bobcats up 2-1. Her second goal would prove to be the difference in the game as the Bobcats would hold on in the second half and get off to a 1-0 start to the 2008 season.

Velaj, who is from Stamford CT, was awarded U-19 Player of the year award and scored 8 goals for the CFC (Connecticut Football Club) Passion this past season in their first year.
