(RALEIGH, NC) – North Carolina State (8-1) used a 7-run third inning to spoil the Quinnipiac Bobcats (0-1) season opener 17-6 at Doak Field this afternoon.
In the first game of a three game weekend series, it was the Quinnipiac Bobcats who started quickly with the early lead.
In the first inning, outfielder Ben Farina (Waterford, CT) reached on a one-out single and fellow outfielder Brian Monack (Branford, CT) scored his teammate on a 2-run home run to right field.
The lead would be short lived though as NC State mounted a comeback against Quinnipiac starter Mike Oskandy (Bethel, CT).
After scoring a run in the first inning, the Wolfpack scored five more runs in the next inning including a 2-run single from senior Kyle Wilson (Crystal Lake, IL).
Leading 6-2, NC State pulled away with a Drew Poulk (Morehead City, NC) grand slam in the 3rd inning. The home run was part of a 7-run inning for the Wolfpack that knocked the Quinnipiac right-hander out of the game.
Senior Mike Oskandy pitched 2 2/3 innings for the Bobcats while allowing 12 runs (7 earned) in the loss.
Trailing 14-2, Quinnipiac rallied to score 4 more runs in the 6th inning against a pair of Wolfpack relievers. Chris Migani (Orange, CT), Mickey Amanti (Waterford, CT) and Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, CT) all added RBI singles while Ben Farina (Waterford, CT) tacked on a sacrifice fly for Quinnipiac.
NC State would counter right back in the bottom of the inning on a Bill Edwards (Raleigh, NC) two run home run. The Wolfpack bullpen would finish the job keeping Quinnipiac scoreless over the last three innings to preserve the win.
Rob Chamra (Cranford, NJ) pitched three scoreless innings for the win, his third of the season. NC State starter Ethan Ogburn (High Point, NC) pitched just 2 2/3 innings before leaving the contest. He received a no decision.
Quinnipiac was lead offensively by Mickey Amanti’s 3 for 4 performance at the plate including an RBI single, as well as Brian Monack’s two-run home run.
A trio of freshman also saw significant time on the mound for the Bobcats as well. Derek Lamacchia (Whitestone, NY), Spencer Kane (Wolcott, NY) and Alex Russow (Wolcott, CT) all made their collegiate and pitching debuts for the Bobcats in the loss.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow at two o’clock at Doak Field in the second game of a three game series. The final game will take place on Sunday beginning at one o’clock.
