Bobcats suffer setback in 14-3 loss at NC State

(RALEIGH, NC) – The NC State Wolfpack(9-1) received six-shutout innings from Jake Buchanan (Dallas, NC) and another strong offensive attack to defeat the Quinnipiac Bobcats (0-2) baseball team 14-3.

Buchanan struggled in the first inning by issuing singles to both Brian Monack (Branford, CT)and Joe Poletsky (Riverside,CT) but the NC State starter was able to strike out Gabe Guerino (Milford, CT)to end the inning.

The Wolfpack would then rally against Bobcat starter Todd DeFrancesco (North Haven, CT)in the bottom of the inning to capture the lead. Quinnipiac would commit two errors in the inning as NC State pulled ahead 2-0.

In the next inning, the Wolfpack took advantage of two more Quinnipiac errors to go ahead 4-0. The Bobcats made a total of seven errors in the contest.

NC State added another run in the third inning and pulled away in the 5th inning when the Wolfpack scored 9 more runs. The big play of the inning came off the bat of Dallas Poulk (Morehead City, NC) who hit a three run home run off of Quinnipiac reliever George Dummar (Branford, CT). The freshmen entered for Todd DeFrancesco who started and lasted just 3 1/3 innings while allowing 9 runs (4 earned) in the loss.

With a 14-0 lead, Jake Buchanan continued to pitch well for NC State. The righthander pitched six scoreless innings, yielding only four hits and striking out seven Bobcat hitters. He would get the win, his second of the season for the NC State Wolfpack.

Once Buchanan exited, the Bobcats started to score against the Wolfpack bullpen. Quinnipiac received an RBI single from catcher Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, CT) in the seventh inning, and then a 2-run single from freshman Ray Buckley (Fairfield,CT) in the ninth. It was the first run batted in for Buckley in his first collegiate at bat.

The two teams will complete the three game weekend series Sunday afternoon at Doak Field beginning at one o’clock.
